The Rising Project was a club formulated during COVID-19 in the University of Oregon’s School of Journalism and Communication to make climate change and climate justice more digestible and creatively spread awareness. As a member for four years and a director for the past two, I’ve helped shape the club into a creative studio that merges creativity with science communication. We’ve grown it from a small social media page to an organization known school-wide for its events, efforts, and inspiration.
THE RISING GAMES
EARTH DAY, 2024
The Rising Project organized the biggest event in our club’s history, The Rising Games, on Earth Day in April 2024. This event comprised of sustainable games like recycling basketball and activities like potting your own plants and DIY jorts. We also got a giant blowup obstacle course where students attempted to outrun the speed of a forest fire.
One of my co-directors and I organized the event and worked with the university, with help from the team to come up with ideas for the activities.
Rising: Saving the world with science communication
“Our goal is to make this information digestible and empower students to make climate-conscious decisions that inspire real change in the world,” said Lily Wong, an advertising major and one of the club’s three leaders.
